Sight in Florida

Hey y'all!

I'm writing you from Florida-Tallahassee to be exact. I arrived here on Thursday morning and will be here till March 4th working on a short film titled 'Sight'. I'm playing the lead character 'Naji' in this Afro-Futuristic world set in the year 2717.

The first day of filming was great yesterday and we've got two more days of exterior shots in the evening. So, another overnight shoot today. In between the shoots, I'm enjoying the heck outta this Sun!! And feeling very grateful for the opportunity.

Just a few pics below from the adventure so far.
More coming soon!
Cheers,

Mr. Joy Neighborhood Tour Announced!

The Mr. Joy Neighborhood tour is here! Starring me!

ArtsEmerson and the Mayor’s Office of Resilience and Racial Equity present Mr. Joy: The Neighborhood Tour, a series of free theatre performances in four neighborhoods of Boston of Daniel Beaty’s Mr. Joy, a play that explores issues of race and class in America to help us find our common humanity.

PLAY SYNOPSIS

What happened to Mr. Joy? A Harlem community is shaken when Mr. Joy, a Chinese immigrant whose shoe repair shop has been a neighborhood pillar for decades, is the victim of an attack. Through the lens of Mr. Joy's customers, from the bubbly eleven-year-old Clarissa (who captured everyone's heart in Daniel Beaty's Emergency) to the sincere and savvy “gangsta granny” Bessie, we learn the profound yet unassuming impact the shop owner has had on each of their lives. Playwright and ArtsEmerson Artist-in-Residence Daniel Beaty (Breath & Imagination, Emergency) returns with another moving reflection on transforming pain into power, this time through the virtuosic performance.... A poignant, funny and stirring solo piece, Mr. Joy invites us to consider how we respond to violence as individuals and as a community, and the power of the invisible ties that bind us all.

HISTORY OF MR. JOY

Mr. Joy was originally produced by ArtsEmerson in the Emerson Paramount Center in October of 2015. The play’s themes of ‘transforming pain into power’ – a signature concept of playwright Daniel Beaty – strongly resonated with Boston audiences both through sold-out performances and provocative post-show conversations. The experience of the play became a catalyst to begin important discussions on race, class and community, and ArtsEmerson felt an urgency to continue them by touring the production throughout the neighborhoods of Boston.

WBUR -The Convert- Best theatre 2016

And so, it's the end of the year and the critics have spoken!

The folks over at the Wbur 90.9 Artery have decided that 'The Convert' at Central Square theatre was one of the best theatre productions on a local stage in 2016. Hoorah for us! I'm still so proud of our work!

Here's what they had to say about the production (to see the entire list of productions click the link below):

"The Convert," Underground Railway Theater
Megan Sandberg-Zakian helmed a riveting production of Ohio-born, Zimbabwe-raised Danai Gurira’s ambitious drama set in the 1890s in colonial Rhodesia. The three-act play is a little cumbersome and its ending is melodramatic. But Gurira’s portrayal of the simmering conflict between imposed Christianity and African tradition is fiery and complex. And the URT ensemble, anchored by an ebullient Adobuere Ebiama as the susceptible title character and a rigid Maurice Emmanuel Parent as a zealous African cleric, was terrific."

Mr. Joy-1st Fall performance

Performed Mr. Joy by Daniel Beaty yesterday for this lovely group of students. The post show discussion was great. Their responses and reflection on the play's themes were dynamic and intelligent. The youth really are the future and if these are the soon to be leaders, then we are good hands.

The Pineapple Diaries Premiere

Last night was an amazing evening. The Pineapple Diaries Season Two, Episode One premiered at The Paramount Center theatre. We were hosted by ArtsEmerson's Reel Life Experience for a night of 'Through her lense' - work created by women, exploring the female voice. We enjoyed great company, wonderful art - including the premiere of film 'Honey Trap' and a lovely Q&A with both the director of The Pineapple Diaries and Honey Trap.
It was a truly wonderful evening. The Pineapple Diaries Season Two premieres on YouTube Thursday, October 6th.

It has been a challenging three and a half weeks of rehearsal. We've had a few invited dress rehearsals and it has been tough and fun and it's time for a performance tonight!
Will do my best to give 100% and then I'm off to NYC tonight for another audition.
